Whale Watching

The peak season for whales July to Sept with height about the last week in August. Mostly fin whales come to feed on plankton and herring attracted by the upwelling currents, with dolphins & other whales interspersed.

Beach Combing - Niger Reef Trail

Two hours after high tide on the freshly exposed beach, is the best time to startexploring. Niger reef on the western side of Saint Andrews’ harbour is named for HMS Niger, a British warship despatched in the spring of 1866 in response to the Fenian crisis.

Van Horne Heritage Trail

The wide, paved trail starts near the end of

Water Street (main street in Saint Andrews)

along the old railway track from Langmaid

Park to the causeway end by Katy’s Cove.

The 21⁄2 meter (8 ft.) wide, active-living

(non-motorized) trail is easily accessible

cyclist & walkers, as well as wheelchairs or

pushing strollers.

Ministers Island Walking Trails

A trail follows the perimeter of the island,

with several other trails crossing through the

fields and the forests in between. There are

many views of Passamaquoddy Bay and of

the shoreline of the town of Saint Andrews.

You can see the distant Chamcook Mountain

near the northern tip of the island.

Caughey Taylor Nature Preserve

Simpson Hill Walking Trail

The Simpson Hill Trail system is a short,

intricate trail system that climbs to a granite

outcrop called Table Top vantage point for

beautiful Oak Bay and the upper St. Croix

River. The trail accesses several different

forest types like pine near the peak, hardwood

in the lowlands, and softwood to the south.
